Applications Open for the 5th Annual Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer Research Grant for Early-Career African Scientists

The Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer Research Grant has announced that it will open applications for its 5th annual grant on March 20, 2023. The grant aims to support early-career African researchers focused on innovative research in environmental and allied sciences, specifically addressing relevant real-world African issues of current and future importance.

With over 1,000 applications received since its inception, the JWO Research Grant has awarded $600,000 to African researchers pursuing solutions to environmental issues on the continent. Notable past recipients include Dr. Gideon Idowu of Nigeria, who received the grant in 2021 and is investigating the impact of microplastic pollution in Africa's freshwater systems.

"The grant showcases cutting-edge, innovative scientific research ideas and provides a platform to foster and support Africa's most brilliant minds," says Dr. Duncan Mcfadyen, Oppenheimer Generations Research and Conservation Head. "By doing so, it contributes African voices into global conversations on environment and sustainability."

The applicants for the 2023 JWO Research Grant should be an early-career African scientist with strong links to a credible African institution and a proven ability to conduct research on the continent. The grant is encouraging trans-disciplinary research applications that seek solutions to challenges in Africa. The grant of $150,000 will support a research program of up to three years, with annual calls for new applications.

Applications for the grant open on March 20, 2023, and close on April 24, 2023. The recipient will be announced at the Oppenheimer Research Conference, and the funds will be distributed based on satisfactory progress.

The JWO Research Grant aims to contribute to the advancement of environmental and allied sciences in Africa and support the continent's most brilliant minds in addressing its current and future challenges.
