Kenya's Masinde Muliro University (MMUST) gets a substantive Vice chancellor after 3 years of waiting

A new era has begun at Kenya’s Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) with the formal inauguration of Professor Solomon Shibairo as the 3rd Vice Chancellor. The colorful ceremony which took place at the University's Graduation square on 12th November, 2021 was graced by the University Chancellor, Dr. Peter Wanyaga Muthoka. Welcoming Professor Shibairo to the University, the Chancellor expressed his delight that finally, the University now has substantive leadership in place; the University's top positions have been held in acting capacity since the removal of the late Prof Otieno as Vice Chancellor in December, 2018 .

Speaking during the ceremony, the Chancellor appreciated the work the new leadership has already started at the University “As the Chancellor of this great University, I commend Prof. Shibairo and his team comprising of DVC, Administration and Finance, Prof. John Kuria Thuo, DVC, Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Hussein Golicha and the DVC, Planning, Research and Innovation, Prof. Charles Mutai for the smooth running of this institution,” he said.

On his part, the new Vice-Chancellor committed to continue on with the transformation of the institution to international standards. Among the issues top on his priority list includes construction of the Kes 800 million (USD 8M) Engineering and TVET complex which will begin immediately as the government had already given the university a grant of Kes 100m (USD 1m) for the project, building of Dr Atwoli International Labor and Leadership Centre at a cost Kes 1.2 billion (USD 12m), the education and health science complex and a students’ Centre. He also said that the university was going to continue to put in place measures to seal loopholes that had led to financial leakages in the past. Prof Shibairo also promised to institute reforms in the university that would steer the institution to greater heights.

Prior to becoming Vice Chancellor of MMUST, Prof. Shibairo served in different leadership positions including at Kenya’s Ministry of Agriculture, The University of Nairobi where he was a dean and also served as acting Principal, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences. Just before Joining MMUST, Prof Shibairo was the Deputy Vice Chancellor - Academic and Student Affairs at Kibabii University. His latest position before ascending to Vice Chancellor position, has been Acting Vice Chancellor, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology a position he held for just over a year.
