South African researcher becomes third African to win Sigma Nursing award

Dr Champion Nyoni

A senior lecturer of the University of the Free State (UFS), South Africa, Dr Champion N. Nyoni has become the third African to win the prestigious Sigma Emerging Nurse Researcher/Scholar award since its inception in 2015.

The Award recognizes nurse researchers; who have achieved significant and sustained broad national and/or international recognition for their work; and whose research has impacted the profession and the people it serves.

According to Dr Nyoni, eligibility for the award is quite a rigorous process, as one is nominated by peers who are also part of Sigma; these peers must motivate their nomination by providing evidence related to the research and scholarship of the nominee.

Commenting on his achievement, he said “I was overwhelmed to be honored with this award as the third African to have won it in the history of the awards. To me, this is an indication that the quality of our work in the School of Nursing is top-notch and meets international standards, and that our contribution to nursing science and nursing education is outstanding.”

The award will also enable his efforts on improving the quality of nursing education impacting the nursing workforce and thereby influencing the quality of health indicators, especially in Africa, where health systems are nurse-driven.

At the time of his nomination, Dr Nyoni had close to 15 publications in nursing education and close to 40 presentations at local and international conferences. He also had several awards for his research work, including the Best Education Paper: Senior Category at the Faculty of Health Science’s Research Forum in 2019.

The Nomination process for the 2021 awards opened on 1st July 2020 and will close on 11th  December 2020.
