The Pan African University (PAU) has announced its 2020-21 fully funded masters and doctorate scholarship programme for young African students, particularly women, from Africa and the diaspora.

The scholarships are part of a range of initiatives by the African Union to build capacity in research for Africa’s industrial transformation, economic and political stability.

The full scholarships are competitively offered in any of the PAU institutions located in Cameroon (PAUGHSS), Kenya (PAUSTI), South Africa (PAUSS), Algeria (PAUWES) and Nigeria (PAULESI). The scholarship awardees sign an agreement to work in Africa after graduation.

Although all students are selected from Africa and the diaspora, it is mandatory for 20% of those selected for any particular institution to be from the host country.

Among the requirements is a maximum age limit of 30 years for men and 35 for women. The higher age limit for female applicants is to provide a bigger pool of women from which to choose.

Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, former African Union Commission chairperson and South African minister of cooperative governance, initiated efforts to redress gender imbalances across the African Union, and the PAU has also been pushing this agenda by creating a platform for more female students to apply for the scholarships.

Closing date for the submission of applications with all supporting documents is 10th September 2020.

The Pan African University (PAU) is a flagship project of the African Union that aims to harness higher education, scientific and technological research to drive the continent’s economic development, social integration and global competitiveness.
