Ethiopia’s First AI-Focused University Set to Open in 2027

Ethiopia is preparing to open its first dedicated Artificial Intelligence (AI) University in the next fiscal year, a landmark step in the government’s broader strategy to position technology at the core of national development and economic transformation. The announcement, made by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, signals Addis Ababa’s ambition to become a leading hub of innovation not only in East Africa but across the continent.

During a session of the House of Peoples’ Representatives (HoPR), Prime Minister Abiy emphasized that establishing the AI-focused institution represents a decisive shift in Ethiopia’s educational priorities, aligning human capital development with the needs of the rapidly evolving global digital economy. Construction of the campus is already underway, and officials expect the university to begin operations within the next year.

The new institution will specialize in applied and research-oriented programs, including machine learning, advanced computing, robotics, data mining, and artificial intelligence research. According to government statements, the university aims to train highly skilled professionals capable of driving innovation and solving complex technological challenges within Ethiopia and beyond.

Prime Minister Abiy framed the initiative as part of a broader reform agenda that places technology among the five strategic pillars of Ethiopia’s growth strategy, underscoring the country’s commitment to cultivating a generation equipped for the challenges of future industries. “Preparing our youth today is essential to securing success in tomorrow’s competitive global environment,” he told legislators.

In outlining the university’s envisioned role, government officials noted that while very few institutions globally are exclusively dedicated to artificial intelligence, Ethiopia’s initiative aligns with similar efforts seen elsewhere, including a renowned AI university in the United Arab Emirates. Ethiopia’s planned institution is expected to adopt a continental outlook, reserving scholarships for students from across Africa while maintaining merit-based admissions for domestic applicants.

The launch of the AI university complements Ethiopia’s ongoing digital transformation strategy, including efforts to integrate AI across sectors such as agriculture, education, and public services. For example, the national Digital Ethiopia 2030 blueprint prioritizes AI, digital infrastructure, and skills development as central components of national development, reflecting a broader regional push to harness emerging technologies for socio?economic growth.

While details on the university’s governance and funding model are still emerging, Ethiopian authorities affirm that the institution will not only boost the domestic talent pipeline but also serve as a catalyst for research collaborations with international partners and diaspora experts. The initiative aligns with broader efforts by the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute and other education and technology stakeholders to deepen capacity building and strengthen the local ecosystem.
