AERC and World Bank Calls for application

The African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) and The World Bank's Africa Region Chief Economist's Office (AFRCE) have formed a dynamic partnership aimed at strengthening economic policy research in sub-Saharan Africa.

Central to this collaboration is the establishment of the AERC-World Bank Visiting Scholars Program, designed to foster knowledge exchange and enhance the research capacity of African scholars. This program offers an exciting opportunity for researchers and faculty affiliated with the AERC network to spend four months at the World Bank, engaging in their own research and collaborating with esteemed researchers from the institution.

This collaboration between AERC and the World Bank represents a significant step forward in strengthening economic policy research in sub-Saharan Africa. Through the AERC-World Bank Visiting Scholars Program, scholars will gain invaluable insights, expand their research capabilities, and contribute to the advancement of African development. This partnership sets the stage for enhanced knowledge exchange and collaboration, ultimately leading to more evidence-based and effective economic policies in the region.

Under this program, three researchers will be selected each year from among the AERC network members. These scholars will have the unique privilege of joining the AFRCE team, actively participating in AFRCE-led activities, benefiting from capacity-building initiatives, collaborating on World Bank Regional Flagship Studies, and closely interacting with the World Bank's renowned researchers. Moreover, scholars will enjoy full access to the extensive resources provided by the World Bank.

During their four-month stay at the World Bank, the selected scholars will dedicate their time to working on research projects aligned with economic development in Africa. They will have the opportunity to collaborate with World Bank researchers, attend AFRCE-led activities, and benefit from capacity-building efforts organized by AFRCE. Scholars will also contribute to ongoing research and analytical work within the Africa Region while making the most of the World Bank's valuable resources.

Applicants for the program must be AERC researchers with an active research project at the interim/post-field stage or have a final research paper. The research project should align with the research agenda of the World Bank Africa Region and address the imperatives for sustained African development.

Researchers interested in this opportunity are encouraged to submit their expression of interest to the AERC Research Department via email at research@aercafrica.org. The application package should include a two-page statement of interest, a draft paper relevant to the research agenda of the World Bank's Africa Region, curriculum/course materials to be improved (if applicable), and an updated curriculum vitae.

The deadline for submissions is June 30, 2023.
