African Academy of Sciences Unveils Ambitious Five-Year Strategic Plan

The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) has embarked on a groundbreaking journey with the official launch of its comprehensive five-year strategic plan. Positioned as the continent's premier advocate for scientific research and innovation, the AAS is primed to propel Africa towards a future of scientific excellence aligned with global sustainability goals.

For nearly forty years, the AAS has been instrumental in nurturing and advancing scientific capabilities and infrastructure across Africa. Now, with the unveiling of its new strategic plan, the AAS is poised to reinforce its pivotal role as a catalyst for scientific advancement on the continent.

The cornerstone of the AAS's strategic vision lies in harnessing the power of science, technology, and innovation to address Africa's most pressing priorities and socio-economic imperatives across five key thematic areas. These areas encompass policy and governance, natural sciences, environmental and climate change, health and wellbeing, as well as social sciences and humanities.

In a bold demonstration of its commitment to sustainable development, the AAS has intricately aligned its strategic roadmap with the overarching objectives delineated in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the African Union Agenda 2063, encapsulating the collective aspirations of the African continent.

A pivotal component of the strategic plan is the rigorous monitoring of progress and impact assessment, ensuring a transparent and accountable approach to implementation. By adopting this meticulous approach, the AAS aims not only to advance scientific research but also to solidify its position as a pan-African leadership 'think tank,' offering advisory services in the realm of science.

The AAS's strategic blueprint is poised to catalyze transformative strides in science and technology, fostering collaboration, and driving evidence-based policy-making to address Africa's unique challenges. As the academy assumes a leadership role in shaping the 'Africa We Want,' the scientific community eagerly anticipates the tangible outcomes of this ambitious endeavor.
