DAAD Receives New Regional Director for Africa

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has a new regional director of the office for Africa, Beate Schindler-Kovats. She will take over from outgoing head Helmut Blumbach whose tour of duty in Nairobi has come to an end.

The outgoing director has previously worked at the DAAD Headquarters in Bonn for 20 years, most recently as the director of the department of South where he has cultivated exchange and co-operation programmes with Latin America, Africa and Asia.

He has gained useful insights into higher education systems worldwide and experience, in the design and management of scholarships and university co-operation programmes throughout his career path.

In Kenya, he has lately led efforts for the establishment of the proposed German East Africa University of Applied Sciences, conceived as a bilateral university between Germany and Kenya, but planned to admit students from all of Eastern Africa region.

Early in March, Ms Beate Schindler-Kovats was hosted by the Commission for University Education (CUE) as a component of its drive in leading scholastic linkages, research and organizations with worldwide foundations.

The visit was likewise intended to give a chance to the new director to gain knowledge into the functions and operations of the commission as one of the strategic partners of DAAD in especially in spearheading quality assurance efforts, CUE reports.

In a meeting graced by the CUE top management including the Deputy Commission in charge of Administration and Finance Walter Oyawa , various issues were examined particularly including  the impact of rapid expansion of university education on quality, the relevance of university academic programmes on national development,  and  the quality of faculty in terms of the number of doctorate holders, and the extent of internalisation of universities for both student and faculty.
