EAC Unveils Ambitious Space Science and Technology Strategy

The East African Community (EAC) has taken a major step towards enhancing its capabilities in space science and technology with the approval of the EAC Regional Space Science and Technology Strategy. This landmark decision was made during the 19th meeting of the Sectoral Council on Education, Science and Technology, Culture and Sports (SCESTCS) held in Dar es Salaam. The implementation of this strategy is set to significantly boost the socio-economic development of the region and establish East Africa as a key player in the global space sector.

The newly approved strategy aims to coordinate and effectively utilize space science and technology to foster growth and development across East African nations. By establishing an integrated EAC space program, the strategy seeks to support an innovative and competitive Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) sector. It focuses on enhancing access to space services and providing essential tools and data for various sectors such as agriculture, health, disaster management, and environmental monitoring.

The strategy also aims to increase the demand for space services by showcasing their benefits and applications in addressing regional challenges and driving development. Effective service delivery and industrial coordination are key components, ensuring streamlined processes and fostering collaboration among stakeholders for efficient and impactful use of space technology.

Aligning with broader sustainable development goals, the EAC’s strategy leverages space technology to address regional issues such as climate change, resource management, and urban planning. By integrating space technology into these areas, the strategy aims to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in East Africa, promoting a more sustainable and resilient future.

With the strategy now approved, the EAC will collaborate closely with member states and relevant stakeholders to develop action plans and frameworks for its implementation. This will include capacity-building initiatives to equip local scientists, researchers, and industry professionals with the skills and knowledge needed to effectively utilize space technology.

Through these efforts, the EAC hopes to position East Africa as a key player in the global space sector, fostering innovation and economic growth across the region.
