FASBMB Launches PROBio-Africa Funding Call to Expand Research Opportunities for African Biochemists

Federation of African Societies of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (FASBMB) has announced the launch of a new funding call aimed at promoting research opportunities for biochemists in Africa. The program, named Promoting Research Opportunities for Biochemists in Africa (PROBio-Africa), is a joint initiative between FASBMB, the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB), and the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS).

The program is designed to foster collaboration and support students and postdoctoral fellows affiliated with FASBMB to carry out research work in the laboratories of scientists in FEBS countries. It is open to students officially enrolled in Ph.D. programs in African countries and affiliated with FASBMB, as well as African postdoctoral fellows and new researchers who have not been more than five years since obtaining their Ph.D. degree.

PROBio-Africa will provide funding for short stays of 1-6 months for the students and postdoctoral fellows in the laboratories of scientists in FEBS countries who belong to FEBS Constituent Societies. The funding will cover the expenses associated with carrying out research work that is a part of the Ph.D. thesis for students and experiments that require special techniques and expertise for postdoctoral fellows and new researchers.

The program's long-term objective is to promote research collaborations and facilitate advanced training opportunities between biochemists in Africa and their counterparts in FEBS countries. The number of awards granted per year will depend on the availability of funds allocated to the program by FEBS and IUBMB. The call deadline is set for Monday, May 15, 2023.

FASBMB, IUBMB, and FEBS will review and select the applications based on the program's eligibility criteria and scientific merit. The launch of the PROBio-Africa program is expected to boost research opportunities and collaborations for biochemists in Africa, helping to enhance scientific development and knowledge transfer in the region.
