Kenya’s Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has once again won the tough test for accreditation, this time in one of its medicine courses namely Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (M.B., Ch.B.) from the industry regulator, the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (MPDB).
The MPDB Chairman, George Magoha and Chief Executive Officer, Daniel Yumbya, signed the certificates to JKUAT and certified Gatundu Level 5 Hospital, in Kiambu county, as a teaching facility for JKUAT students.
The Board acknowledged that JKUAT had met the set educational curriculum and had adequate teaching facilities required for the programme, besides deploying qualified personnel to run the course, JKUAT website reports.
The update on accreditation comes scarcely seven days after the university’s School of Medicine was recorded in the World Directory of Medical Schools, an accomplishment that has raised the visibility of the school as a reputable source of qualified medical graduates
Welcoming the accreditation, Principal College of Health Sciences, Haroun Mengich said it was a statement of quality education offered by the College, adding that the College continues to attract and retain high calibre scholars in its effort to provide the best medical education.
According to Prof Mengich, the university will roll out postgraduate programmes in various specialisations of medicine to further build capacity and support Kenya’s development aspirations with regards to healthcare.
The Dean, School of Medicine, Reuben Thuo, said that the university had embraced a network-based methodology in teaching medical students characterized by early patient exposure and emphasis on applied research.
The university is set to graduate the inaugural cohort comprising over 40 students in November this year.
Last month the university won accreditation from the Engineers Board of Kenya, for a number of its engineering programmes, allowing it to continue training students in new fields of engineering.
