Kenya to host a $78 Million disease research center (Africa CDC)

City of Nairobi where Africa CDC will be hosted

The government of Kenya has announced plans to develop a disease research center worth the US $78m following requests by the African Union and the World Health Organization (WHO) for Kenya to host the center that will serve the entire continent.

The Cabinet revealed the plans and said that the center will position Kenya as a regional and continental hub in medical research and disease control and also give the country a head start in combating medical issues such as the coronavirus pandemic.

As part of its support for the establishment of the African Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (Africa CDC), the Chinese government has offered to fund the construction of a 21-storey office building for the center. Upon completion, it will provide job opportunities for Kenyans in the technical, administrative and support functions.

As the world races to stem the spread of the virus, the World Health Organization (WHO) in the African Region is calling on countries to implement critical actions in the next few weeks while there is still time to prevent the outbreak in the region from overwhelming health services.
