Kenya's Umma University Students Support Programme worth USD 19M Launched

Umma University in Kenya has launched an Sh1.9 billion (USD 19 Million) scholarship programme aimed at benefiting 2,780 students with scholarships and interest-free study loans. 

The Umma University Students Support Programme (UU-SSP) is a partnership between the university, Africa Education and Development Trust (AEDT) and Direct Aid International and will run for the next seven years. Daily Nation reports.

The launch of the program follows a successful pilot phase launched last year that saw a total of 250 students benefit and informed the signing of this cooperation agreement.

Speaking during the launch, Umma University Vice-Chancellor Idle Farah said noted that the programme will ensure that students access higher education and improve enrolment at Umma University. In addition, the financial aid has components of work-study, mentor-ship and community service programme aimed at equipping the students with job-market skills.

The programme has been classified into categories, where 1,320 students will benefit solely from 100 per cent interest-free loan and 1,460 will receive partial scholarships with the remaining part of the fees offset by interest-free loans, repaid in flexible monthly instalments.

Of the 1,460, 125 students will receive 80 per cent scholarships and 20 per cent interest-free loans to constitute 100 per cent tuition fee, 14 students will get 70 per cent scholarship with the balance offset by interest-free loan, 420 students will get half scholarships and half interest-free loan, another 350 will receive 30 per cent scholarships and 70 per cent interest-free loans, while 425 students will get 20 per cent scholarships and 80 per cent interest-free loans.
