World Bank Group Launches 2024 Africa Fellowship Program to Empower Next Generation of African Change-Makers

The World Bank Group's Africa regions have officially opened the application period for the highly anticipated 2024 WBG Africa Fellowship Program. Geared specifically towards PhD candidates and recent PhD graduates from Sub-Saharan Africa, this prestigious program aims to cultivate influential change-makers in development research and policymaking. With a focus on supporting poverty reduction efforts across the region, the fellowship empowers the next generation of African leaders to drive sustainable change.

Designed for Sub-Saharan African nationals, the fellowship offers young and talented individuals a unique opportunity to enhance their skills and expertise through hands-on experience. Successful candidates will have the privilege of spending six months closely collaborating with the World Bank Group either at their headquarters in Washington D.C. or in one of their country offices. In-person availability is required during the period of January to June 2024.

Throughout their fellowship, participants will be actively engaged in a diverse range of activities, including research, economic policy formulation, technical assistance, and lending operations. By playing an active role in the World Bank's mission of eradicating poverty and promoting shared prosperity, fellows will be able to make a tangible impact on development initiatives. The program aims to foster and nurture a pipeline of exceptional African talent interested in pursuing careers within international institutions, African governments, think tanks, and academia.

In addition to the invaluable experience gained during the fellowship, selected candidates will also be considered for short-term consultant positions with the World Bank Group for an additional six months, commencing in January 2024. This additional opportunity allows fellows to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired to real-world challenges.

The WBG Africa Fellowship Program boasts a remarkable track record of success, having fostered a strong network of young African professionals deeply passionate about development. Fellows will have the chance to collaborate with experts across various sectors, contribute to knowledge generation and dissemination, shape global and country policies, and actively participate in the establishment of inclusive growth strategies in developing nations.

Interested applicants are encouraged to submit their applications before the deadline of August 25, 2023. The program is particularly keen to promote gender equality and female representation within development research and policymaking, and thus women candidates are highly encouraged to apply.

The WBG Africa Fellowship Program presents an unparalleled opportunity for aspiring African change-makers to create a lasting impact on poverty reduction efforts in the region. By investing in the capacity-building of young African talent, the World Bank Group continues to champion sustainable development and shared prosperity across Sub-Saharan Africa.
