President Uhuru Kenyatta asks Interim Letter of Authority for Presbyterian University to be reinstated

In a move that gives hope to some of Kenya’s struggling universities, Presbyterian University of East Africa is about to receive an Interim Letter of Authority after it was earlier revoked by the Kenyan government.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has indicated that the Presbyterian University of East Africa has made strides towards conforming with Kenya’s Commission for University Education (CUE) to deserve the reinstatement of the letter of interim authority to the university.

The university suffered a major setback early this year after Commission for University Education (CUE) announced it has canceled the letter of authority as the university failed to meet key standards.

“Your commitment to establish the Presbyterian University of East Africa as a top-notch institution of higher learning is reflective of your enduring spirit, action to progress the training of our people. The Government of Kenya is cognizant of these efforts and commends you,” said Kenyatta.

The university, which started operations in 2007, was found to be in a financial crisis leading the then Cabinet Secretary of education Fred Matiang’i to order the shutting down of the university.

In a report to the CS dated January 22, CUE recommended that the letter of interim authority awarded to the university in 2007 be revoked.

“The university had defaulted on remittance of staff salaries, deduction to financial institutions, leading to some staff members being listed at credit reference bureau,” reads the report.
