PAUSTI Registers Sixth Cohort of Students



The Pan African University Institute for Basic Sciences, Technology and Innovation (PAUSTI) hosted by Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), has registered the sixth cohort of students comprising of 115 students drawn from different African countries.

The students from 35 different countries will pursue masters and doctorate degree programmes offered by PAUSTI including in mathematics, molecular biology and biotechnology, civil engineering, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering.

Speaking during the orientation of the group Evans Atambo who represented Kenya’s Ministry of Education complemented saying that the students, saying they deserved and had an active role to play in the actualization of Africa’s development blueprint, Agenda 2063.

He said that the Kenyan government had committed resources for the construction of tuition and administration block, with the first phase having been already completed.

The Vice-Chancellor of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Victoria Ngumi said JKUAT will continue to play its role effectively in hosting PAUSTI for the benefit of Africa.

She challenged students to use their energy and creativity and engage in cutting edge research whose results could be leveraged for economic development, the university reports.

According to Prof. Ngumi, PAUSTI and JKUAT have qualified staff, knowledge and networks, all of which is essential for an academic environment.

Betty Lame Phelalo a student from Botswana pursuing MSc. Molecular Biology and Biotechnology said the scholarship would enable her to undertake research that can impact Africa’s health sector while raising the profile of female scientists.

The students appreciated African Union for the scholarships, pledging to use their time at PAUSTI acquiring actionable knowledge for Africa’s benefit.

All students admitted to PAU campuses in Kenya, Algeria, Cameroon, Nigeria and soon to be South Africa study exclusively on generous AU scholarships, the university being a continental institution of excellence.
