Ethiopia Wins Bid to Host COP32 Climate Summit in 2027

Ethiopia has officially been confirmed to host the 32nd United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP32) in 2027, a decision that underscores the continent’s growing influence in shaping global climate priorities.

The endorsement, announced at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, followed a coordinated push by African nations, with Ethiopia edging out Nigeria in a closely watched contest. For Ethiopia, the victory represents more than the right to host a flagship climate summit, it signals a re-emergence on the global stage after years of internal upheaval and demonstrates Africa’s increasing cohesion in climate negotiations.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed celebrated the decision as a continental success, emphasising the unity displayed by African states in rallying behind Ethiopia’s bid.

“Africa has spoken with one voice at the 2025 UN Climate Change Conference, and the world has listened,” he said, describing the endorsement as both an honour and a responsibility. Addis Ababa, he added, aims to deliver an inclusive and ambitious COP that strengthens Africa’s position as a solutions-driven region.

The African Union Commission echoed this sentiment. Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf described Ethiopia’s selection as a reaffirmation of Africa’s determination to take charge of its climate future and of Ethiopia’s role in driving that vision.

Although the selection comes at a time of global frustration over unmet climate finance pledges; including the elusive USD 100 billion annual commitment, Ethiopia’s climate track record helped secure continental backing.

The country’s Green Legacy initiative, which aims to plant billions of trees to reverse land degradation, has become one of Africa’s most visible environmental programmes. Coupled with large-scale hydropower projects and efforts to expand climate-resilient agriculture, Ethiopia presented itself not only as a willing host but a credible climate actor.

“These initiatives continue to inspire the region,” the AU Commission noted, praising Ethiopia’s commitment to long-term sustainability.

Addis Ababa’s status as Africa’s diplomatic capital; home to the African Union, UNECA, and numerous international missions, was a decisive factor. The city’s organisational experience, from AU summits to global development forums, positions it as a seasoned host for multilateral events requiring extensive coordination.

The AU pledged full cooperation with Ethiopia and the UNFCCC Secretariat to ensure COP32 advances Africa’s climate agenda, with a particular focus on equitable finance, adaptation support, and the recognition of Africa as a critical site for climate solutions.

COP32 is expected to serve as a platform for Africa to redefine its role in climate negotiations. With rising climate losses estimated at USD 7–15 billion annually, African nations hope to secure more predictable financing, fairer global rules on adaptation, and partnerships that unlock the continent’s potential in renewable energy, green minerals, and sustainable development.
