University of Cape Town is the best in Africa: The Times Higher Education ranking, 2020

University of Cape Town; ranked as the best University in Africa

Times Higher Education has published its annual ranking of the world’s top universities for 2020, listing 50 African universities among them.

Notably, South Africa has two universities ranked among the top 200, with both the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) ranked in this bracket. The University of Cape Town (UCT) has jumped up 20 places to 136th position making it top in the continent.

These top two are followed by Stellenbosch University and the University of KwaZulu Natal ( South Africa), Aswan University and Mansoura University (Egypt), and Covenant University (Nigeria), all falling into the top 500 bracket.

The 50 Universities were represented by nine countries spread across Africa. Egypt had the highest number at 20, South Africa came second with 10, Algeria followed closely with 8, Morocco and Nigeria had 4 each, while Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana and Uganda were represented by 1 university each.

THE World University Rankings published once a year, assess almost 1400 institutions worldwide and the results of the rankings are independently audited PWC an international audit firm.

 The Times Higher Education uses 13 performance indicators classified into five areas: teaching (30%), research (30%), citations (30%), international outlook (7.5%) and industry income (2.5%).
