AU/CIEFFA Calls for Groundbreaking Research on Gender and Education in Africa

In a bold move to advance gender equality through scholarly research, the African Union International Centre for Girls and Women’s Education in Africa (AU/CIEFFA) has launched an open call for research proposals focused on the intersection of gender and education. Submissions are open until August 8, 2025, and aim to support evidence-based policymaking across African Union member states.

Targeting researchers in the social sciences, education, and gender studies, the call encourages master’s, doctoral, and post-doctoral scholars to contribute scientific articles that highlight the challenges and opportunities shaping girls' and women’s education on the continent.

This initiative forms part of AU/CIEFFA’s broader agenda to inform gender-transformative education policies. By generating African-led, context-specific data and analysis, the Centre hopes to influence reforms that promote inclusive, equitable, and resilient education systems.

The research themes include:

  • Gender-sensitive curricula and teacher training

  • Girls’ participation in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics)

  • Educational continuity in conflict and post-conflict zones

  • Innovative strategies for reaching vulnerable populations

  • Gender-responsive pedagogy and learning environments

Selected articles will be featured in a special edition scientific journal and AU strategic reports, amplifying their impact within regional and global policy spaces. Researchers will not only gain academic visibility but also a chance to shape the future of education for African girls and women.

“This is more than a research opportunity—it’s a platform to shift narratives and drive systemic change,” said a spokesperson from AU/CIEFFA.

The initiative also aims to foster cross-border collaboration by connecting African and international scholars committed to tackling educational inequities. Through this, AU/CIEFFA seeks to cultivate a vibrant academic community capable of responding to Africa’s most pressing gender and education challenges.
