Botswana Partners with SGCI to Launch National Research Fund

Botswana is embarking on a transformative journey in the realm of scientific research as it teams up with the Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI) to establish the Botswana National Research Fund (BNRF). This landmark initiative is poised to shape Botswana's research landscape, foster collaboration between the government and the private sector, and facilitate partnerships with other Sub-Saharan African nations.

Lesego Thamae, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Botswana Ministry of Communications, Knowledge, and Technology, anticipates the establishment of BNRF before the end of the next financial year in April 2025. This initiative holds the promise of significantly boosting research funding, serving as a catalyst for scientific advancement in the country.

The SGCI's support is comprehensive, encompassing financial assistance as well as extensive training for government staff in research management, ethics, and intellectual property. Thamae underscored the positive impact of SGCI membership on Botswana's ability to oversee collaborations and intercountry projects, highlighting the acquired skills that position Botswana to effectively administer bilateral collaborative initiatives without external reliance.

Botswana has already engaged in collaborative research projects with 12 other countries through SGCI, providing valuable learning experiences that will inform and benefit BNRF upon its establishment.

Bolarinwa Kemisola, President of the Women in ICT Foundation, Nigeria, commended the initiative for its significant contribution to progress and collaboration in Sub-Saharan Africa. She foresees transformative advancements across various sectors including healthcare, transportation, security, and education. Kemisola emphasized that increased funding in science, technology, and innovation will not only yield immediate benefits but also elevate Botswana's global stature, fostering collaboration, knowledge exchange, and innovation.

The establishment of BNRF signifies Botswana's strategic commitment to advancing scientific research and innovation, aligning the nation with global counterparts on the international stage. As Botswana gears up to launch this pivotal initiative, its positive effects are expected to transcend national borders, contributing to regional progress and collaboration.
