East African Universities at the Centre of New Regional AI Alliance

A new regional initiative to accelerate artificial intelligence (AI) adoption across East Africa is placing universities at the forefront of innovation, following the launch of a regional AI network by the East African Community (EAC) and its partners.

The AI alliance was unveiled during the recent Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Conference in Kigali, where regional stakeholders called for stronger collaboration among universities to drive research, skills development, and responsible AI deployment. The initiative invites higher education institutions across the region to join a coordinated network aimed at strengthening Africa’s position in the global digital economy.

The new alliance reflects a strategic shift toward collective, cross-border innovation, as East African countries seek to move beyond isolated national efforts. By bringing universities into a shared framework, the EAC aims to harmonise research, training, and policy engagement in artificial intelligence.

Partner institutions, including the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) and the East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO), are supporting the rollout of the initiative. Together, they are working to create a regional ecosystem that links academia, industry, and policymakers in advancing AI solutions tailored to local challenges.

At the heart of the alliance is a recognition that universities are critical to shaping the future of AI in the region. The network is expected to support joint research programmes, curriculum development, and innovation initiatives that equip students and researchers with practical AI skills.

By fostering collaboration across institutions, the initiative seeks to build a pipeline of talent capable of driving technological transformation in sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, education, and climate resilience. Universities will also play a key role in ensuring that AI development aligns with ethical standards and regional priorities.

The launch comes amid growing concern over the gap between rapid technological advancement and the region’s capacity to fully harness it. Stakeholders at the conference emphasized the need for coordinated investment in digital skills and research infrastructure to ensure that East Africa remains competitive in the global AI landscape.

Through the alliance, universities will gain access to shared resources, training opportunities, and collaborative platforms designed to strengthen both teaching and research in artificial intelligence. The initiative also aims to promote knowledge exchange and innovation across borders, reducing duplication and maximising impact.

A central focus of the AI network is to ensure that innovation translates into tangible socio-economic benefits. By aligning research efforts with regional development priorities, the alliance aims to leverage AI to address pressing challenges, including food security, public health, and environmental sustainability.

The EAC’s call for universities to join the AI alliance signals an important milestone in East Africa’s digital transformation journey. By strengthening collaboration between academic institutions and regional bodies, the initiative lays the foundation for a more integrated and innovation-driven ecosystem.
