INGSA-Africa Launches 2025 Mentorship Call to Build Climate-Smart Science Advisers Across Africa

The Africa Regional Chapter of the International Network for Governmental Science Advice (INGSA-Africa) has officially opened applications for the 2025 edition of its flagship Science Advice Skills Development Program (SASDP) — the only structured mentorship initiative on the continent focused on strengthening science-to-policy skills.

Now in its fourth cycle, the six-month program begins in September 2025 and aims to equip early and mid-career African researchers with the tools to influence public policy through evidence-based insights. The 2025 cohort places special emphasis on climate resilience and cross-sectoral innovation, encouraging applicants working in health, food systems, energy, and water security.

The SASDP pairs mentees with experienced global science advisers and policy practitioners, fostering one-on-one virtual mentorship relationships. Participants also benefit from curated resources and access to a growing pan-African network of science-policy professionals.

“We’re cultivating a new generation of science-policy leaders who can navigate the complex challenges Africa faces today, especially around climate adaptation,” said a spokesperson from INGSA-Africa.

Since its inception, the program has supported mentees from over 20 African countries, cutting across academia, applied research, policy bodies, and NGOs. The 2025 call is open to both mentors and mentees, with mentors expected to commit to monthly virtual sessions over the program’s duration.

Institutions — including universities, research institutes, and academies of science — are encouraged to nominate outstanding candidates. Applications and nominations must be submitted via the INGSA-Africa portal by 10 August 2025.

The initiative underscores INGSA-Africa’s commitment to strengthening science-informed decision-making and ensuring Africa’s scientific voices are central to policy development amid mounting global and regional challenges.
