In a monumental leap toward democratizing education, Kenya proudly announces the inauguration of its inaugural Open University. With the goal of breaking down barriers and providing top-quality education to a broader cross-section of the population, this groundbreaking initiative opens up new horizons of learning within the East African nation.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by none other than President William Ruto himself, who presided over the momentous occasion. Located in Machakos County, approximately 70 km southeast of Nairobi, the Open University was granted a charter by President Ruto, underscoring its official status as a pioneering institution. President Ruto's speech highlighted a long-standing issue: the traditional higher education establishments in Kenya have long grappled with limited physical space, leaving a significant portion of eager learners without access to educational opportunities. The establishment of the Open University addresses this challenge head-on.

The crux of Open University's innovation lies in its online course offerings, effectively reducing the financial burden on students. In contrast to the traditional universities, which demand a minimum of 200,000 Kenyan shillings (roughly 1,401 U.S. dollars) per annum, the Open University's online courses will be priced at a mere quarter of that amount.

"This will help people at the bottom of the pyramid access education," President Ruto reaffirmed. He further disclosed that meticulously designed courses and comprehensive training materials have been meticulously crafted and uploaded online, with the inaugural lessons poised to commence this September.

Positioned within the heart of Kenya's technological epicentre, the Konza Technopolis, the Open University is poised to play a pivotal role in realizing the country's ambition of achieving a universal 100 per cent transition to higher education. Its curriculum encompasses a spectrum of offerings, including a Bachelor of Data Science, a Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity, and a Bachelor of Technical Education, catering to an array of diverse interests and fields.

Chaacha Nyaigotti-Chacha, Chairman of the Commission for University Education, lauded the institution's establishment, emphasizing its role as an alternative to conventional universities. The flexibility and accessibility intrinsic to online learning stand to be invaluable, particularly during tumultuous periods such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ezra Maritim, Chairman of the University Council, echoed the university's commitment to rectifying historical disparities that have long plagued the higher education system. The Open University's mission is to dismantle barriers that have historically marginalized economically disadvantaged students and undervalued their previous learning experiences.

With the launch of Kenya's pioneering Open University, the nation takes a resolute stride toward realizing its vision of inclusive and equitable education for all. This unprecedented initiative sets a precedent not only for Kenya but also for the global educational landscape, embodying the spirit of progress and accessibility for all.
