Mauritania Takes Stride in Higher Education with Plans for First Science University

In a landmark move to bolster higher education and scientific research, Mauritania has unveiled ambitious plans to establish its inaugural science-focused university in the capital city of Nouakchott. The announcement, made by the Mauritanian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research on November 21, signifies a visionary initiative aimed at cultivating academic, technical, and professional competencies to nurture a skilled workforce crucial for sustainable development.

Financed by the United Arab Emirates, the new university is poised to offer specialized programs in information engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, and metallurgical engineering. Aligned with the specific needs of the Mauritanian scientific market, the institution anticipates enrolling around 1,500 students, marking a pivotal step in addressing the country's lack of scientific capacity.

This strategic move is part of the government's comprehensive five-year implementation plan for research and innovation, complemented by a ten-year strategy for higher education. The overarching goal is to leverage research and innovation as drivers for socio-economic transformation while cultivating a skilled workforce to propel the nation towards a knowledge-based economy.

Mauritania's education sector has faced challenges, evident in low tertiary enrollment rates and a deficit in scientific capacity. Global indices, such as the Global Innovation Index, highlight the urgency for educational and innovative investments to drive socio-economic progress.

With a tertiary enrollment rate of 5.7% in 2019, significantly below the regional average of 33.75%, as reported by the Arab Development Portal, the new science university aims not only to bridge this gap but also to strengthen connections between academia and industries. This collaborative approach aims to foster innovation capabilities, bringing about a transformative impact on Mauritania's educational landscape.

In tandem with the establishment of the new science university, another significant project is underway – the Tagant University in Tidjikja. Together with existing institutions like the University of Nouakchott and the University of Islamic Sciences in Laayoune, these universities collectively shape Mauritania's higher education landscape. The government's vision is to bridge the gap between academia and industry, fostering innovation capabilities crucial for the country's advancement.
