South Africa's University of Johannesburg Secures USD 5.6 Million to Strengthen Global Research Partnerships

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has successfully secured a USD 5.6 million grant to broaden its international research collaborations and enhance opportunities for student development, positioning the institution as a stronger global research player. The funding comes from the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) Fellowship Centre, under the University Partnerships Knowledge and Innovation Programme (KPI).

The funding, awarded through competitive international mechanisms, will support expanded cooperation with leading research institutions worldwide. It aims to deepen scholarly exchange, drive joint research outputs, and create new avenues for postgraduate training and mobility particularly for students from historically disadvantaged backgrounds.

UJ Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Tshilidzi Marwala, described the funding as a “major milestone” in the university’s strategic efforts to elevate its global research footprint.
“This investment reflects confidence in our institutional research excellence and strengthens our capacity to participate meaningfully in international knowledge systems,” he said. “It will enable UJ scholars to engage in collaborative research that tackles complex global challenges while enriching our student experience.”

The funding will be deployed across several strategic areas, including health sciences, artificial intelligence and robotics, socio-economic development, and sustainable urban futures. These thematic priorities align with both national development goals and pressing global research agendas, ensuring that collaboration efforts yield impactful and socially relevant outcomes.

A key component of the grant is support for student mobility and training programmes that enable UJ students to gain international research exposure. This includes exchange opportunities, joint supervision arrangements, and short-term research placements with partner universities abroad.

South Africa faces complex developmental challenges requiring evidence-based solutions,  from public health inequities and climate change adaptation to technological innovation and economic transformation. The newly secured funding positions UJ to collaborate with international peers on research that directly addresses these national imperatives.

By strengthening ties with partner institutions in Europe, North America, Asia and Africa, UJ seeks to amplify its contributions to multi-disciplinary research endeavours. These collaborations are expected to lead to co-authored publications, shared research infrastructure, joint grant applications, and enhanced knowledge transfer.

The grant will also support capacity building for researchers and early-career academics, offering tailored workshops, mentorship programmes, and research leadership development. This focus on professional growth aims to cultivate a pipeline of researchers capable of competing on the global stage.

According to UJ leadership, the funding is part of a broader strategy to elevate the university’s global rankings and research impact indicators, metrics increasingly used to assess institutional performance and attract future investment.
