In an effort to spotlight and recognize academic excellence in Sub-Saharan Africa, Times Higher Education (THE) has officially opened the data portal for the second edition of the Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) University Rankings. Universities across the region are invited to participate by submitting their data before the portal closes on March 30, 2024.
The Times Higher Education Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) University Rankings 2024 has commenced its data collection phase, inviting universities across the region to participate in its second edition. The data portal is now open for submissions, with institutions encouraged to contribute their information before the deadline on March 30, 2024.
All universities within the region offering undergraduate programs are eligible to partake in the ranking process. Participation is free of charge, contingent upon institutions submitting their data through the designated portal and facilitating a student survey, with a minimum requirement of 50 valid responses for ranking consideration.
Guidance on data submission procedures is available on the portal to assist participating universities. Upon submission, institutions may undergo a verification process to ensure data accuracy.
While the exact publication date for the rankings is pending confirmation, it is anticipated to be released later in 2024.
The SSA University Rankings aim to address the unique challenges faced by higher education institutions in sub-Saharan Africa. The project, spearheaded by a consortium of African and international higher education entities, has incorporated improvements to its methodology, including the addition of new metrics focusing on leadership, ethics, and African heritage.
In its inaugural edition, the ranking garnered participation from 121 universities, with data derived from direct submissions by institutions, student surveys, and bibliometric data provided by partner Elsevier.
A notable enhancement for this year's ranking is the inclusion of the student survey in four languages: English, French, Swahili, and Portuguese, reflecting the linguistic diversity of the region.
The call for data submission signifies a pivotal step towards producing a comprehensive evaluation of higher education institutions in sub-Saharan Africa, fostering transparency and accountability within the academic landscape.
