The Education Sub Saharan Africa (ESSA) in liaison with the Research for Equitable Access and Learning (REAL) Centre at the University of Cambridge and in consultation with researchers featured in the African Education Research Database (AERD) are organizing a virtual summit to discuss the urgent need for additional funding in African education research.

This international conference that has been scheduled for June 24, 2021 from 1pm to 3pm, GMT is set to bring together education stakeholders including researchers, policy actors, donors and practitioners to share ideas on African education research funding and the way forward.

The conference will provide a forum for presentations and interactive discussions with key objectives of the event being to explore: Funding opportunities, requirements and expectations of funders based in and/or outside Africa, barriers researchers face in accessing funding and the strategies they use to overcome them, how funding policies can be improved to better support researchers based in Africa and whether or how funding is aligned to education policies and priorities in Africa.

This is building up on a similar conference held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 2019 where urge for greater investment in African education research was strongly emphasized at the Leaders in African Education Research workshop organized by the REAL Centre in collaboration with the Centre for Global Development and the University of Addis Ababa, in June 2019. This workshop brought together stakeholders from across Africa to discuss issues of research priorities and the challenges researchers were facing.

Resource persons in the virtual event includes: Prof Tassew Woldehanna - President of Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, Dr Pauline Essah -Director of Research and Insight, Pauline Rose – Director of REAL Centre, University of Cambridge, Claudia Frittelli of Carnegie Corporation, US & Professor Coumba Touré Kane of Cheikh Anta Diop University, Senegal among others.
