South African Universities dominates top positions in Webometrics ranking



South African Universities have once again dominated the top ranks of African leading Universities; this is according to the latest Webometrics ranking published in July 2019. Out of the 10 highest ranked, only 2 are not South African; Egypt’s University of Cairo (5th) and Kenya’s University of Nairobi  (10th )

The University of Cape Town has once again been ranked highest in Africa and is 274th worldwide, followed by the University of Witwatersrand (ranked number 437 worldwide) while Stellenbosch University is no. 3. Other Universities from South Africa in the top 10 includes the University of Pretoria, University of Kwazulu Natal, University of Johannesburg, UNISA and University of Western Cape.

According to the rankings, Egypt has the second-highest number of leading Universities in the continent with Alexandria University ranked 12th, American University of Cairo 15th and Mansoura University at no. 18. The University of Ghana is leading the West African institutions at no. 16 followed by Nigeria’s University of Ibadan which is 17th. In Eastern Africa, Nairobi is leading at 10th followed by Makerere University from Uganda which is ranked 14th and Addis Ababa University at 19th.

Webometrics ranking has been published twice a year (January and July) since 2004 and relies on volume and quality of contents published on the web to rank higher education institutions across the globe, over 28,000 were ranked in this round.

Worldwide, the USA has produced the best-ranked Universities with 17 out of the leading 20. Harvard, Stanford and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are the best 3 in the world, followed by the University of Washington and University of California Berkeley to complete the top 5. The University of Oxford is 7th and the only that is not American among the leading 10.
