Kenyan Physician Dr. Stephen Mutwiwa Appointed Executive Director of African Academy of Sciences

The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) has announced the appointment of Dr. Stephen Mutwiwa, a Kenyan physician and public health expert, as its new Executive Director. With over 20 years of experience in global health leadership, Dr. Mutwiwa is set to guide the pan-African institution as it strengthens Africa’s research ecosystem and promotes science, technology, and innovation (STI) across the continent.

Dr. Mutwiwa assumes leadership at a time when African nations are increasingly prioritizing STI as a driver of economic growth, health system resilience, and climate adaptation. In his new role, he will oversee AAS initiatives aimed at mentoring emerging scientific leaders, fostering research collaborations, and ensuring that African-generated knowledge directly informs policy at national and continental levels.

Professor Lise Korsten, President of the AAS, highlighted Dr. Mutwiwa’s qualifications and vision:
"Dr. Mutwiwa brings deep expertise in health systems and research partnerships. His leadership will strengthen the Academy’s role as a continental platform for scientific excellence and a trusted advisor for Africa’s future."

Reflecting on his appointment, Dr. Mutwiwa said, "The AAS is vital in bridging the gap between research and development. I look forward to working with our Fellows and partners to ensure that African innovation contributes meaningfully to sustainable development across the continent."

Dr. Mutwiwa’s professional trajectory spans significant roles in both clinical practice and public health management. He recently led a multi-year women’s health initiative in Rwanda and previously served as Country Director for Jhpiego in Kenya and Rwanda, managing comprehensive portfolios in HIV, malaria, and health system strengthening. His work involved close collaboration with national governments and international development partners.

As an active mentor and educator, Dr. Mutwiwa has supervised researchers at the University of Nairobi and the Great Lakes University of Kisumu, contributing to the growth of the next generation of African scientists. His research, widely published in peer-reviewed journals, focuses on maternal health, family planning, and health system resilience — areas critical to achieving sustainable health outcomes across Africa.

Dr. Mutwiwa holds an MD and MPH from the University of Nairobi and a PhD in Health Systems Research from the Great Lakes University of Kisumu. He is also a Fellow of the Global Health Leadership Executive Programme at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, reflecting his commitment to both scientific rigor and strategic leadership.
