Kenya has announced the establishment of the Grand Challenges Kenya Platform, a new national initiative aimed at strengthening locally led scientific research and innovation through domestic grant funding for Kenyan researchers, scientists, and innovators.

The announcement was made during the closing ceremony of the Science, Technology, Research and Innovation for Society Week 2026, marking what government officials described as a significant step in advancing Kenya’s ambitions to become a leading regional hub for science, technology, and innovation.

Speaking during the event, Principal Secretary for the State Department of Science, Research and Innovation, Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak, said the platform would provide strategic support for Kenyan-led innovations designed to address pressing national and global challenges. He described the initiative as part of a broader effort to strengthen domestic research financing and ensure that local innovators are equipped to develop solutions grounded in the country’s realities and development priorities.

The new platform places Kenya among a growing number of African countries that have established national Grand Challenges programmes, linking the country to a wider global innovation ecosystem focused on solving complex development and public health challenges through science and technology.

The initiative emerged as one of the key outcomes of STRI4Society Week 2026, which convened policymakers, researchers, innovators, investors, and development partners for discussions on science diplomacy, innovation financing, research commercialization, and technology-driven

According to Prof Tom Kariuki, CEO, SFA Foundation, the initiative reflects a broader continental movement toward investing in African-designed solutions to African challenges. He noted that national Grand Challenges platforms are becoming increasingly important in supporting locally driven innovation ecosystems and reducing dependence on externally driven research agendas.

The platform is expected to officially launch in the coming months and will offer both early-stage and scale-up funding opportunities for innovators working on transformative solutions in areas linked to health, agriculture, technology, sustainability, and economic development.
