The National Research Fund Kenya and the African Population and Health Research Center have entered into a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening the link between research and policy in Kenya and across the region.
The collaboration is designed to address a long-standing challenge in many African countries: the gap between knowledge generation and its practical application. By formalizing cooperation, the two institutions seek to ensure that research findings are more effectively translated into evidence-based policies that inform decision-making in critical sectors such as health, population, and socio-economic development.
A key focus of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is the development of structured frameworks that position scientific evidence at the center of government planning and development programmes. This aligns with a broader continental push to embed research more deeply within policy ecosystems, ensuring that investments in science deliver measurable societal impact.
The partnership also places strong emphasis on domestic resource mobilization for research. Historically, African research ecosystems have relied heavily on external donor funding. Through this collaboration, NRF and APHRC aim to unlock new funding pathways and strengthen locally driven innovation, supporting Kenya’s ambition to become a regional hub for research excellence.
Another central pillar of the agreement is the development of early-career researchers. The institutions plan to expand mentorship programmes, training opportunities, and collaborative research initiatives to build a strong pipeline of emerging scientists. This is intended to close capacity gaps while strengthening both individual careers and institutional research systems across Kenya and beyond.
By fostering young talent, the partnership is expected to enhance long-term research capacity within universities and research institutions, ensuring sustained contributions to national and regional development challenges.
In addition, the collaboration highlights the importance of institutional synergy in amplifying research impact. By pooling expertise, infrastructure, and networks, NRF and APHRC aim to scale research initiatives, promote interdisciplinary collaboration, and enhance knowledge sharing across Africa.
Ultimately, both institutions emphasize that closer alignment between research and policy will improve the relevance and quality of research outputs, particularly in addressing pressing issues such as public health, demographic change, and sustainable development.
