Africa-China Agricultural Innovation Alliance Launched to Drive Sustainable Farming Transformation

In a strategic move to reshape Africa's agricultural future, the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) and the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) have launched a landmark initiative — the China-Africa Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Alliance (CAASTIA) — aimed at strengthening collaboration, modernizing agriculture, and promoting science-driven food security across the continent.

Unveiled under the broader framework of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), CAASTIA is set to become a flagship platform connecting top African institutions in agricultural research, education, and innovation with their Chinese counterparts. The alliance is poised to foster a long-term, strategic ecosystem where science and diplomacy converge to drive agricultural transformation.

“This alliance represents more than just collaboration—it is a bold step toward strategic science diplomacy that empowers African institutions to lead in agricultural innovation,” noted an AAS spokesperson.

CAASTIA offers founding African member institutions a range of opportunities, including:

  • Access to cutting-edge agricultural technologies from both Africa and China

  • Joint research funding for high-impact agricultural projects

  • Participation in exchange programs, joint laboratories, and capacity-building initiatives

  • Collaboration through platforms like the Sparkle Project to boost product development and exports

  • Scholarships and mentorship programs for emerging agricultural scientists

The alliance also seeks to influence agricultural policy by inviting members to co-develop strategic reports that will shape the direction of China-Africa rural development and food systems cooperation.

With a focus on sustainable agriculture, food security, and value chain innovation, CAASTIA aligns with Africa’s broader agenda to industrialise its agricultural sector and improve climate resilience. It also prioritises technology commercialisation, knowledge transfer, and youth training to ensure the sector's long-term transformation.

Eligible African universities, research institutions, and agri-tech innovation hubs are encouraged to apply for founding membership by 13 June 2025. Applicants must demonstrate institutional commitment to agricultural development and innovation.

As momentum builds, CAASTIA is expected to serve as a powerful engine for agricultural growth, fueled by cross-border knowledge, investment, and shared vision.
